Police identify Greenfield boy, 4, who died after experiencing flu-like symptoms

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Seventy local veterans will be part of the 7th Indy Honor Flight to Washington, D.C.
World War II veteran Art Potter, 94, is getting ready to join his fellow soldiers on the trip of a lifetime. On Saturday morning he will fly out to Washington to visit the WWII Memorial.
This upcoming flight is unique because 68 Indianapolis firefighters will accompany the veterans as their guardians. Six of the veterans traveling on this Honor Flight are retired IFD firefighters.
Potter served in the U.S. Army and Air Force. He was a gunner during WWII and during one of his mission the plane was brought down over Germany. Potter became a prisoner of war for one year. He was forced into the Black March where POWs had to walk several miles a day while carrying Red Cross parcels. Hundreds of soldiers did during the forced marches. Potter said he never talked about the war much until recently.
“I think it’s a wonderful thing that we’re going on this trip. It’s wonderful for them to remember us old veterans,” said Potter.
Even though Potter is in his mid-90s he is still very active. He is an avid bowler.
When asked what part of the trip he is looking forward to the most, Potter said he wants to see the White House and the WWII Memorial.
There is a homecoming ceremony for the veterans when they return Saturday, October 18. The public is invited to attend the celebration at Plainfield High School from 9:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m.
