Man beaten on Monon Trail opens up about the vicious attack
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (Oct. 15, 2014) — A man who was attacked and beaten by four men and then robbed on the Monon Trail spoke to FOX59 about the terrifying ordeal.
It happened around around 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 10 on the trail near East 35th Street and the bridge over Fall Creek. It was Doug Eslinger’s place to sit and eat dinner after work, but that tranquility turned to terror.
“Just saw these four guys come walking up, one of them was on a bike, and they were coming across the bridge,” Eslinger said. “Two of them stopped near the bridge and the other two went past me, so, then I was like stuck between them.”
After two of the guys went in to the woods behind him, Eslinger tried to leave.
“I heard somebody coming real quick from behind me and just hit me like right up in here,” said Eslinger, as he pointed to his head.
He said he then fell to the ground.
“Next thing I knew, they were all around me and just stomping on me.”
Eslinger thinks the attack lasted only a few seconds, but there was a feeling of helplessness.
“At the time, I was hoping it would end,” he said.
After it finally did, the suspects got away with his bike, backpack and money. Luckily, Eslinger was able to flag down an officer from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department’s Ranger Division who was on patrol. Eslinger was taken to Methodist Hospital, where he had surgery on his arm.
“They had to open it up and put a metal plate in and some screws to hold the bone in place and stuff,” he said.
Eslinger is thankful for that caring officer.
“Followed us to the hospital in the ambulance and then he stayed there for three or four hours,” Eslinger said.
