Speeding driver has really, really good reason not to stop for police

FORT DODGE, Iowa (Oct. 15, 2014) – Police saw an SUV going 30 miles over the speed limit this week—but it turned out the driver had a good reason for going so fast and refusing to stop.
Police pursued the SUV after seeing it speeding around 4 a.m. Tuesday in Manson, Iowa. The driver, Ben Kohnen, was racing to get his wife, Rachel, to the hospital because she was in labor.
According to WHO TV, Ben saw the officer turn on his lights and follow him. His wife told him the baby was coming and they couldn’t pull over.
“I think I was screaming, ‘Oh dear God, we can’t have the baby in the car,’” Rachel recalled.
They tried calling 911, but Rachel said the dispatcher probably couldn’t understand her between contractions.
“I know I was (a) crazy lady screaming into the phone,” she said.
While they rushed toward the hospital in Fort Dodge, they met authorities who’d deployed stop sticks that deflated their tires. After being stopped, the couple said they were ordered to the ground and held at gunpoint until police realized it was indeed an emergency.
Rachel was then rushed to the hospital. An hour later, she gave birth to Hazel—who weighed nearly 10 pounds.
Ben said his new daughter is doing fine.
Manson’s police chief said no charges have been filed.
